The Tragic Sinking of the "Bayesian" Luxury Yacht Near Porticello
Published: August 19, 2024
The luxury yacht "Bayesian" met a tragic end in the early hours near Porticello, Sicily. According to the latest data from MarineTraffic, the yacht was last tracked approximately 700 meters (2,296 feet) from the harbor, just after 03:00 BST. This information was obtained from the onboard transponders, a standard tracking method for vessels.
The "Bayesian," built in 2008, had spent most of its life cruising the Western Mediterranean. In the week leading up to the incident, the yacht had been navigating the northern coast of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, a popular destination for tourists.
While the tracking data does not reveal who was on board during the sinking, this information is typically recorded in private shipping manifests.
Yacht Management Responds to the "Bayesian" Sinking
Camper & Nicholsons, the company responsible for managing the "Bayesian," confirmed that the yacht sank around 04:30 local time due to severe weather conditions. At the time of the incident, there were 12 guests and 10 crew members aboard.
In an official statement, the company said, "The Italian Coast Guard is leading search and rescue operations and has safely recovered 15 individuals. Efforts are ongoing to locate the seven missing persons. Our primary focus is to support the ongoing search efforts and provide all necessary assistance to the rescued passengers and crew."
The company also mentioned that further information will be provided as it becomes available. Unfortunately, one person has been confirmed dead, and six others remain missing.
Rescue Ship Captain Recalls Harrowing Night
Karsten Borner, the captain of a nearby vessel that successfully rescued 15 people, shared his experience during the storm that led to the "Bayesian" sinking. Borner described the powerful gusts that struck his ship in the early morning hours. Despite the challenging conditions, he managed to stabilize his vessel while anchored, using the engine to maintain control.
During the storm, Borner noticed the "Bayesian" nearby and took action to avoid a potential collision. "We were able to hold our ship steady, and once the storm subsided, we realized the vessel behind us had disappeared," Borner recounted.
